I didn't either, until I had a dentist tell me my saliva was rather more
acidic than what is considered normal. I got to thinking about what
acid does, and what it might do to a reed. I tried the water thing, and
found that it doubled the life span of a reed. A few more playings
might not have been worth the effort, but doubling the life of the reed
sure was!
