Nathaniel,
I aggree with you on your break in proceedure EXCEPT the part of
soaking your reeds in water instead of saliva. I've never understood this.
Don't your reeds get wet from saliva when you play? I can see using this
process to have the reed absorb water from the butt up, but some players
are so obsessed with their film containers of water (aged from the last 2
weeks!). I think we all have to face the fact that reeds WILL die. No
reed will last forever. With a gradual break in they should last a
resonable time. Don't ask how long - I don't hold a personal relationship
with each reed - either they work, need work, get put away for other
weather, or are land fill.
