Subj: B flat reeds on E flat instruments

I experimented yesterday by trimming slivers off the edge of an
indifferent #3 V12 B flat reed, and cutting a chunk off the butt end - the
difficult bit. It worked just like that - with no extra trimming - and it
turned out a better reed than any E flat reed I had, particularly in the
altissimo register. So, again, what is WRONG with E flat reeds?
