Rebecca,
Here are some suggestions: Thea King, in England (probably the
most influential female clarinetist in that country), Janet Hilton (making
quite a splash there as well), Laura Flax (fabluous American who has
commissioned and/or premiered numerous masterpieces such as, I believe,
the "Monolog, For An Actor" by Shulamit Ran), Elsa Ludwig Verdehr (sp?),
who is possibly the most influential female clarinetist in the US and a
noted teacher (in Michegan) and performer (with the Verdehr Trio, which
has commissioned dozens of major compositions). All of these people are
still alive so you should have no trouble getting lots of information
on (and FROM) them.
