Fernando's posting about an upcoming performance of the Hummel Quartet
for clarinet and strings nudges me to ask about the second movement.
I'm just finishing the conversion of the first movement into MIDI format and
in looking ahead I find that the second movement was composed for the four
instruments in different time signatures at different points, 12/8, 6/8,
3/4, 2/4
and 4/4 with the eighth note seeming to be the common denominator. It
appears that the 3/4, 2/4 and 4/4 measures come out even when eighth triplets
are treated equivalently to eighths in the 6/8 and 12/8 parts.

Anyway, did someone on the list comment about the second movement being
a musical joke? I remember something about it, but not the details.

Secondly, what would you think if I just write the whole thing in 6/8 for
everyone,
with maybe the Alternivo section in 2/4, unless triplets appear there as well?
I don't have the parts in front of me so I'm a little fuzzy about what I
observed last
night.

Thanks,

Oliver
