I teach band at the middle school level, and find the time commitment,
salary, and benefits to be exactly what I need in order to pursue an active
performance career as well. I am finished teaching each day at 2:30, and
have plenty of time for the 2-3 hours of practice needed, as well as other
rehearsal time and evening gigs. When I compare my schedule and salary to
that of the high school and university level teachers in this area, I know
that I am in the right place for me. There is very little evening time
required [just 4-5 evening concerts per year], and, in spite of dealing
with the annoyances of the pre-adolescent mind, I find the age quite
satisfying to work with.
