I started playing bass clarinet because I just loved the sound--
especially the low, sonorous notes. There was a certain sadness
to it that I loved (but then again it could've been adolescent
angst). I still love the instrument, but I've found since then
that you can coax a lot of moods out of a bass clarinet. It's
definitely a "moody" instrument in that sense.

The first bass clarinetist I heard was Eric Dolphy. It was
"Agression" from _Live at the Five Spot Vol 2_ and I was just
blown away. He got sounds out of that instrument I didn't
think existed. I got a ton of his albums afterwards, all in
glorious vinyl, and he's remained one of my all time favorite
clarinetists.
