I guess I am a little older than some of the folks that have
replied to this so far. At about age 12 (1960) I think we had more Pete
Fountain records than anyone else. Some of his playing was easier to
imitate than Benny Goodman's.

When I was in high school I was listening to recordings of concert bands
(Eastman of course), big bands, and orchestral music. I had very few
"classical" clarinet records. The only one I can recall was of Benny
Goodman playing the Copland concerto. This was a real eye-opener for me
after studying Mozart and Weber. I wish that when I was in high school I
had known about clarinet works from composes like Milhaud and Finzi.

As a "born-again" clarinetist, I am now more focused on classical music
than I ever was as a student.
