I agree about using the C clarinet -- last fall my "spousal equivalent"
and I worked up some Baroque flute duets for clarinet & marimba to play
for a gig. After struggling mightily with transposition (why are they all
in keys like E major?) and trying to get that Baroque style, I too decided
that the C clarinet had more potential in this area! And yes, they are
difficult enough without the added hassle of transposing into 6 sharps.
