Thanks for the information on Eaton and Smith. I tried to do a search for
it at the local Borders but all I could come up with was a microtonal vocal
piece by Eaton. Is there a recording of this available anywhere?

The name Bill O. Smith sounds familiar to me from my college days but that
was a long, long time ago. Do you know much about him? Is he still
active? Where is he based?

Check out John Eaton's "Concert Music" for unaccompanied clarinet; he uses
a kind of register-key trill effect like the one you describe, extensively.
This set of short movements was written for Bill O.Smith, and is I
believe the first ever solo to use multiphonics and similar extended
techniques, which it features extensively. I've played it several times a
few
years ago when still a student, and would be interested to hear from
others who've done it how they did with the high-G multiphonic; I
remember that made me the most nervous!
