There's a weird multiphonic effect I can get when I'm playing a note in the
second register and I take my thumb off the register key. The sound
oscillates for a few seconds between the current note and the chalumeau
note before stabilizing on the lower note.

My questions are: Is there a specific name for this effect? Has anyone
developed any serious technique using this effect? Is there any repertory
out there that utilizes something like this?
