From: dgilbert <dgilbert@-----.COM> Subj: tone hole repair Q's Date: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 07:40:40 -0500
The tone holes on my old wood Buffet had worn very concave w/ many years
of use. One repair person filed them flat..they are now quite low. The
result is the horn went sharp about 10-15 cents and the tone became
*brighter*.
While the pitch is (for the most part) easy to control, the loss of tone
Q is distressing.
A second repair person has suggested that the first was in error to have
filed the holes and that the tone holes should have been built up w/
an epoxy-granulated grenadilla wood combo.
My Q's: Does this work? How much should I expect to pay? Is it advisable
to do this?
I am not one to buy a new clarinet every few years and would like to
keep the old girl.(Yes,yes, yes...I Do think of my clarinet as
feminine).
I know we have a highly respected, expert repair staff on this list.
TIA to all.
