Hello!
My name is Chris Blount and I play New Orleans style jazz, running my
own (amateur) band which plays here in England as well as abroad. I
play the Albert / simple system clarinet and therefore have to search
for the older instruments when I need a change. Having greatly admired
the music of George Lewis (1900-1968) I have been very interested in
the different tones he achieved over the years using various different
clarinets. His classic recordings were in 1944 in New Orleans and at
this time he was playing a Pedler Albert metal clarinet (I have seen
these mentioned from time to time) and in the late 1940s and early
1950/1 he played a Fontaine.
I am searching for examples of these two
clarinets to actually play them in my band, so any help would be
great. I do have two boxwood clarinets made by a friend who, although
not a maker, has succeeded in taking the keys off older instruments
and making new bodies. Too much detail to list here and I have gone on
long enough but if anyone is interested I'll be happy to give more
details. Regards to all Chris
