Subj: tuning rings

It is always best to have an air column go through the instrament
with the least amout of turbulence. When you pull a joint of the clarinet
far enough you get a gap inside that will cause turbulance. Tuning rings
close that gap and allows for a "cleaner" air column. At least this is what
I was always told.
