I have a french tuned instrument (Buffet S1, serial # F220xxx). I was
told on this list a while ago, that because it is french tuned, it is
tuned to 442. Can a barrel help bring this down to 440? I generally
play with bands which are either at 440, or even slightly lower. In order
to get my tuning note (concert Bb) in tune, I often have to pull the
barrel out pretty far, which makes the throat tones flat. I usually end
up splitting the difference, and pulling the middle joint out a bit.

I'm using the buffet barrel that came with it, along with a very old,
unmarked buffet mouthpiece which I found in my dad's case. I've also used
+ liked another very old, unmarked LaMonte mouthpiece, again from my Dad's
case. I just found the Lamonte, so I haven't had time to sit down at a
tuner with it, but to my not-so-perfect ear, it sounds better tuned than
the Buffet.

can someone explain the difference between the different tapers?

Thanks
Scott
