Subj: Beginning clarinet suggestions?

Hi. My name is Michael Connolly. I've been on this list for about a month
now. Anyway, I'm in my third year of alto sax in the school band...doing pretty
well (got into All-West <the west Tennessee clinic band> the last two years.)

Anyway, I want to take the step towards the world of the clarinet...What
I'd like to know is:

1. How much of the required skill will I have already by being familiar with a
single reed and similar fingering?

2. I've been quoted around $200 for used plastic horns from the local store,
and $400 for used wood ones. What other factors should I take into
consideration? Are these prices in line with the low end of each material?
What are things to look and watch out for when shopping?

3. Is there a reason this might be a bad idea in general?

Thanks for the assistance. Replies to <michael@-----.com> are slightly
preferable, but the list is fine.

Michael Connolly
