Try Nightsongs by Richard Peaslee. I did it with my old college
orchestra back in 1995. It is actually written for trumpet and/or
flugelhorn (with strings and harp), but it lays VERY well for clarinet,
and actually fits the color of the clarinet better than that of the brass
instruments, I think (and some trumpet friends of mine agree). Mr.
Peaslee even put a note in the score that a clarinet could be used
instead of trumpet/flugelhorn, although it wasn't until a year after I
decided to "steal" the piece that I saw the note. Nightsongs is both
modern and romantic. There are several opportunties to change registers
from what is written (and very effectively), just because the clarinet
has a wider range to exploit than the trumpet. There are also places in
the music that call for flutter-tonguing and timbre-trills, both of which
can be done on the clarinet very effectively. Anyone who decides to do
the piece is welcome to reply, and I'll discuss my exact alterations from
the printed music, or how to accomplish the written timbre-trill.
Nightsongs is available from Margun/Gunmar Music. A piano reduction is
also available, I assume from the same company. I hesitate to refer to
it as a "reduction," though, because it is every bit as effective as the
orchestral arrangement.

Just a suggestion,
