I don't claim the following to be definitive but again from memory I
belive a "Philharmonic Society" is a Society of First Class Musicians
and a Philharmonic Orchestra is made up of the Societys members with
profesional augmentation as required. A Symphony Orchestra is a much
more commercial enterprise made up entirly of profesionals and playing
for unrestricted paying crowds. All this does seem to have vanished
into History but I belive this this is the original distinction.

If we have any English Cricketers on the list it is rather like
"Gentelmen and Players"
