Subj: leaking pads?
Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 20:16:56 -0500

A quick and dirty way to see if you have any leaks, is to take each
section by itself, plug up one end, close all the keys using normal
fingering, and blow into the other end. You will hear or feel any leaks.
If you have one or two bad pads, you could have just those pads replaced.
But the new pads will be a different thickness than your old pads, key
heights could change, and the horn will feel different to you. Besides...
if all the pads are the same age, the rest are probably getting old, too.
And like Steve says, a little key tightening might not hurt. My vote is
to get the whole horn done, and not have to worry about it for several
more years. Burch
