Our wind symphony recorded that piece last year. I think
"la meta" means middle or half, in Italian. So maybe only half of the 1st
clarinets should play it? That's just a guess, but it is a soft
passage, so it might make sense.
I'm really not sure either!

Cindy is right - "meta" (as long as there is a grave accent on the "a")
does mean half. SO it probably means half the players.
