Doug,
The difference is that glass is made from melted silica (sand to
us) and is poured into a mold (or blown and shaped). Crystal is actually a
type of Quartz and is mined from the ground, just as coal is.

The naturally occurring quartz mineral is generally referred to as "rock
crystal". I think if clarinet mouthpieces were made from this, the makers
would want us to know about it.
