Dear Ken,

Just to respond quickly to your earlier post...

I am a graduate student in the Yale School of Music. Yale's music program
is divided into two divisions--the Yale School of Music, a graduate
performance school, and the Yale Department of Music, the academic branch
which takes care of undergraduate music and graduate programs in the
academic disciplines--history, theory, etc.

The Department of Music really emphasizes academics, even in its undergrad
programs, though the large performing ensembles (Yale Symphony, Concert
Band, Glee Club, etc.) are quite good. There is no performance faculty,
though some undergraduates are able to study with the School of Music
faculty. For example, Mr. Shifrin has taught one undergraduate along with
the grad students in his studio while I've been here. Yale offers a BA
(no BM) degree and also offers a five-year BA/MM degree. I think there is
an audition process in order to be admitted to the BA/MM program, and the
School of Music faculty must have some say, but I know very little about
it. If you were to attend Yale as an undergrad but not study with School
of Music faculty, you would still be able to take lessons with a graduate
student and attend master classes, etc.

One interesting side note--many of the undergrads at Yale are
multitalented. Even those who intend to pursue careers in music often
take undergraduate majors in other disciplines. For example, Charles
Neidich, who has taught at Yale this year as Mr. Shifrin is on leave,
attended Yale as an undergrad and received a bachelor's degree in
anthropology. An oboist currently finishing BA/MM in the School earned an
undergrad degree in English.

Lots of options, but all require commitment.

Best of luck to you!
