Some players prefer a close facing because it gives them a darker sound.
I believe this depends on the physioloyg of each individual person.
Personally, I find that a close facing limits my reed choice. Most that
I have tried are very particular about reed adjustment, and will not work
with a wide variety of reeds. I prefer a much more open facing, with
wide rails. This gives more options for reed placement, and consequently
a greater number of reeds work with little or no adjustment. It's not
that I don't like adjusting reeds - I own a ReeDuAll and prefer to make
my own reeds, even the blanks. For me right now its a matter of time.
I'd rather be practicing!
