The Eastman Wind Ensemble plays almost nothing but original compositions
for band and I have had some great parts. One piece that we are playing
right now is the Three City Blocks by Harbison (available as a rental).
It is jazzy and quite difficult. The instrumentation includes 4 flutes
(w/picc), 2 oboes, 2 Eb clar., 4 Bb clar, 2 bass (one doubles contra), 2
Bassoons (2nd doubles contra), 2 alto sax, 2 tenor sax, and a lot of brass
and percussion (I don't know how much as I try not to look around too much
in rehearsal).

Other pieces that we have played with great parts include much of the
music of Anthony Iannacone (sp?), esp. a new piece that we recorded last
year called Sea Drift. Our Conductor, Donald Hunsberger, has done some
spectacular arrangements, too.... All of his have full usage of all the
instruments of the band--bass and soprano alike. Some of the best have
been the Bach organ transcriptions (such as the Tocatta and Fugue in
d-minor that is on the Live in Osaka CD). and a new one he just did for
this tour.
