women composers, let me know. i haven't come across many. don't say
hildegard von bingen (that's obvious), or shumann's wife (it Was shumann's
wife, wasn't it, who composed?)."

Check Mark Charette's list on sneezy; he's got composers marked by gender.
There's lots of 20th century female composers for clarinet. Joan Tower
wrote Wings (unaccompanied) and a dynamite concerto that Linda Bartley did
a stunning performance of with the Madison Symphony last year (conducted by
a female conductor, with Tower in attendance -- for women's
history/composers month, as I recall). Katherine Hoover has a concerto.
Libby Larsen wrote Dancing Solo (unaccompanied). Yvonne Desportes wrote
LOTS of clarinet quartets; another is Clarino Quartet by Ellen Taafe
Zwilich. Elisabeth Lutyens wrote a Trio for cl, cello and piano, and also
Five Little Pieces for cl and piano which I played a few months back and
people seemed to like a lot (it's short and very easy, has an interesting
layered serial construction). This is just a partial list. Some of these
are recorded; I think Robert Spring recorded several of Joan Tower's
things, for instance. You might also try calling Eble Music, they might
have someone knowledgeable about this. Good luck!
