If you have a scanner handy you may want to scan the manuscript
at high resolution using the largest gray-scale ramp your software/
scanner supports. Using your favorite scanner and/or image processing
software you can then postprocess the image and "clean" it up using
the digital filters.

If the spots are obscuring notes, may I suggest using colored gels
in between the manuscript and scanner? Sometimes pictures taken in
different light show "hidden" details.

Franck most assuredly knows this, but I'm sure there are others who
haven't thought of the idea.
