Thanks for this reply. It is a good idea. You are right that the spelling of
names on old manuscripts is often fluctuating. The name Rolla for instace is
spelled Rola on the manuscript of his basset horn concerto (of which I have
a copy). Gopfert is sometimes written Gopfart, etc.. But in the present
case, I do not think that this explanation is likely to be correct. As you
surely know, there are several Stamitz, at least two (father and son), but
the style of their music is very close to the Mannheim school. The music I
have at home (I am now in my lab) is much more in an italian style. I will
check again tonight if your suggestion looks palusible.
