I finally got a copy of Tom Ridenour's book on clarinet fingerings and
tried out the "resonant" fingerings for the throat notes - - Ab, A and Bb.
What a discovery! It makes the transition to the clarion B so natural
without a change in tone quality. Being a relative beginner, this is
totally a new discovery, although I may have approximated the resonant
fingerings in "preparing" to cross the break. Can I assume that
professional clarinetists routinely use these fingerings? And if so,
why aren't they made the default fingerings and why aren't beginners
taught this way from the start?!
