The posting from Dr. Lacy caused my other brain cell to kick in. I
consulted my copy of European & American Musical Instruments by
Anthony Baines, The Viking Press, and there, on page 106, I find:
"The Boehm-system oboe, patented by Buffet and Klose',Paris, 1844,
is at once distinguishable from the regular series by the three
lower-joint rings in close position. Though still advertised after the
turn of the century, players in general found something unsatisfactory
with its tone. No design of oboe with Boehm-system fingering has yet
won more than local or fleeting popularity, though in time one may
succeed. (For a full account of the French development of the oboe,
see Bate, The Oboe.)" Plates 573-576 show oboes (obii?) with clarinet-
like keywork. I guess I should read these books, instead of using them
for couch legs. Burch
