The oboe is a conical instrument, the clarinet is a cylindrical instrument.
Whether a double reed or a single reed the oboe is still a cylindrical
instrument closed on one end which therefore overblows at the octave (like
the saxophone).

As to why more people dont use these single reed substitutes, I think you'd
have to hear one to truly understand. I've only heard the single reed
mouthpiece played on bassoon, but I promise you it's an experience I'm in
no hurry to repeat.
