I'll leave the other questions to better minds, but this I can help
with. Dolphy-- go find "Out to Lunch" or "Outward Bound" or *any*
recording of his that has "God Bless the Child" on it. The latter
is a classic of bass clarinet jazz. Don't give up on Dolphy. His
music is wonderful.

There are also a few cuts of Duke Ellington's band featuring
bass clarinet-- can anyone help me with names here? I'd love to
find out who is bass clarinet player was.

Also, if you can find it, get anything by Trance Mission or
Beth Custer's "The Shirt I Slept In." She does quite a few
cuts on bass clarinet and they are wonderful. In particular,
the Trance Mission works have her paired with Didgeridoo master
Stephen Kent, and it's incredible how well the bass clarinet
works with and constrasts to the droning of a Didgeridoo.
Really worth owning if you have any interest in jazz or world
beat music, but you do have to hunt them down.
