I've been 'listening in' for a week or so, and thought I'd get in on some
of this! I'm an IU grad, a student of Jim Campbell, MM90. I've been
kind of isolated from my clarinet kin in southern Michigan for a few
years now, and it's great to catch up on some chat. Currently I play in
several small orchestras (one regularly) as principal, have a full rack
but never seem to use that Eb or bass much. My question to you is this:
Not to open the old "what mouthpiece do you use" conversation, but I've
been using the Selmer C85 (120) for about 7 years now and love them.
They are capable of great variations in tone color, are compatable with a
variety of reed/ligature setups, and are equally at home in the orchestra
or for chamber playing. The projection you get is HUGE. I have only met
one other clarinetist other than Jim who plays this mouthpiece, yet
several people in retail positions say they sell as fast as they can
stock them. At the time I was in Bloomington, most other students in
Jim's studio chose other mouthpieces. If they are this popular, who is
using them? They are too much to handle for your average high school
student, so I have pretty much ruled out the band director avenue. I
would greatly appreciate feedback on this - I have started to believe
that there is some sort of entity out there that is sucking them all in
and I am starting to scare myself!

Thanks,

Denise Gulliver-Lewis
