I think aurally it's easier if all players sit. That way, you can hear
the viola better to tune with (in my opinion, anyway). When I did three
of the Bruch Acht Stucke, I sat next to the pianist (parallel with the
keyboard, more or less), and the violist was half-facing us, in the curve
of the piano. (At least, I think that's how it was! It's been a while
now.) Best for hearing and projecting both, I think. I don't know that
there is a mandatory set-up...the recital police aren't going to come
after you or anything!
