I woke up way too early this morning. So, I decided to edit some program
notes for a recital I'm playing in April. I am playing the Poulenc Sonata
and checked out some books about Poulenc and his music. I checked out the
Mellers bio, the Daniel's Poulenc: His Artistic Development and and Style,
and a new bio by Benjamin Ivry. David N., thanks for the recommendation of
the Daniels, very informative. I would like to recommend the Ivry as well.

Now the question. I remember back to the first time I played this piece for
my old clarinet teacher. He made reference to Weber regarding the Poulenc.
I don't remember the explanation for this observance. I brain is like a
sieve, and I have since learned to write important things like that down.
Although I can definitely see a "darkness" or perhaps romanticism in the
mood of the 1st 2 movements, I don't know exactly what that observance is
in reference to. Benjamin Ivry made the same reference, and says only the
following:
"...it has a touch of German Romanticism via Weber that at times give it a
spooky air."

and now my undies are in a bunch about it. I just gotta know if there is
more to this reference other than the fact that the music, for Poulenc does
seem to be on the romantic side. Is there anyone who can offer a concrete
explanation to these references?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Frank Garcia
