Gary,
I am not aware of any such progression of "clarinet" texts (of
the type you ascribe to European music schools). However, I could be
simply uninformed (it has happened before). I'll repeat what I wrote
before: Go to the Groves Encyclopedia of music or even Brittanica, and use
the bibliographies on the Clarinet articles. They'll tell you where to go
for all kinds of information. I can recommend one useful book for a
general, if sometimes not-up-to-date-on-latest-developments, background:
Jack Brymer's very accessible "The Clarinet" published by Schirmer Books
(MacMillan Press) as part of the Yehudi Menuhin Music Guide series. There
are quite afew others with more esoteric and detailed information such as
Pamela Weston's three wonderful collected biographies. Reading the
"Clarinet" magazine is a good idea too.
