If I am reading the liner Notes correctly on this CD (Mozart, The
last 5 Symphonies, Sir Neville Marriner, Academy of St Martin in
the Fields) near my computer, it give a date of 25 July 1788 for
Symphony No. 40 K. 550. The notes say he wrote his last three
symphonies in a period of six weeks.
