With a really good shop - yes, but it is much harder, since it
becomes more and more difficult to position the sensor(s) or film
to avoid the metal parts. I was just thinking, however, that a
sonogram from inside the bore might work, since the possible
imperfections would be reflected before they hit metal.

Hey - anyone from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor out there?
They have a great lab for materials testing and maybe the Engineering
School might get interested.
