It's an aural change as well as physical. I imagine the professionals find
a reed and a strength and go with it for years. For the hobbyist, the
experimenter, the diletante, equipment changes can be frequent. I was *
profoundly* affected for about 72 hours by Jonathan Cohler's remarks about
using a softer reed. It was good advice and got me working with softer reeds
and open facings. Then my pendulum swung back (thank God) and I hit middle
ground again. Instead of hard and soft, try thinking in terms of "best
response when i am playing XXXX" or "maximum flexibility when i need to move
between XX and XX in such and such a piece." Good luck. ----Bill F.
