Why don't teachers help with selecting a non-wood instrument?

This is not generally true. I have examples of the opposite.

Can't this be caused by the marching itself? Or the capabilities of the players?

This is also not generally true. I have examples of the opposite. We play a
march 'Liberation' (don't remember the composer) with the first, second and
third clarinet parts between G2 and G3. Other examples: 'El Gato Montes'; 'On
the Quarter Deck' and solo and first part of many Souza marches.

I second this.

This is, again, not generally true. There are many examples of expensive
instruments with major problems or the opposite. What's more, don't forget the
mouthpiece which determines sound and intonation for a large amount.
