I'm over 30 and still march in an adult band. And no, it's not always
pretty but we do it for a variety of reasons.

I use a Buffett B12, the clear one recently talked about. It's a
gorgeous horn, has copper-plated keys, and I also use it in my
dixieland band. I have trouble with flat throat tones, but chances
are that's me and not the horn. Other than those tones, I use
a Vandoran BJ5 mpc on it and it gives out a pretty good sound
assuming I'm on top of it and haven't had one too many Hurricanes.

My *first* choice for a marching/outdoor horn would be a decent
METAL clarinet. Drop a plastic one on a cold day (some of
our members got to play at a very cold inaugural) and you'd have
one shattered clarinet.
