Nancy, it seem intuitively clear that the use of any plateau system
instrument should help not exacerbate the problem. You don't have
to be so precise in the laying down of fingers on a plateau system.
In fact, it leads to bad habits on the soprano clarinet, but the bass
clarinet, as a plateau system, tolerates just such liberties.

Best for you is the fact that some manufacturers may make a
plateau system soprano clarinet.

This will minimize your need to have fine muscle control in order
to play a finger over a hole very carefully, this act probably
aggrevating your arthritic condition.
