Perhaps one could think a bit about Beethoven's 2nd clarinet parts. These
have a lot of going up and down across the break in them, and are often
more difficult to play in a "seamless and predictable" (D. Yungkurth)
manner than the 1st part. Did Beethoven want seamlesness, etc.? It seems
likely that he did, as otherwise the parts would not fit together.
(I'm trying to use the simplest possible language - there could be more
shooting out there in the really technical areas...).
I think in general that the properties of the ensemble sound are highly
relevant. One can't talk about the sound of an orchestral instrument
without bringing in what it has to play with.
