Hello Nancy,

How very true! I would also question the wisdom of possible plans to
convert Sneezy to frames-format. I too, do not have web access, or
rather, not "real time" access. To ask for an address or phone number
of a woodwind dealer and be referred to the website is wasteful and as
you state, for some users, not of much use. Also when I was new to the
list, I inquired about existence of any FAQ files and aside from being
pointed to the Sneezy site (which _IS_ appropriate to do when one is
looking for something as lengthy as a FAQ) was told that when the
sneezy archive goes to frames format, that those who are not
frames-capable would be "out of luck" (shiver, shudder!). (Actually,
there are already some things on Sneezy that are frames-only, but
still, much is not (yet) (thankfully!!)

I DO hope that my comments are not taken wrongly; it's just that I
think that the articles, FAQS, archives and all that great stuff
should be kept in a form that's accessible to the greatest number,
rather than excluding some users for the sake of sprucing things up.
After all, isn't that (accessibility) more in line with the purpose of
having the archive site in the first place? And believe me, as a
relative novice on this wonderful instrument, I'd MUCH rather put my
pennies towards a GOOD WOODEN INSTRUMENT and toss my synthetic model(!)
than go through changing my computer platform just so I can access
frames! (NOT)

Now (having vented my 2 cents <g>), a tip for you, Nancy (if you are
one of whom you speak), or any others without Web access. A means by
which you CAN retrieve Web pages, articles, etc, even if you only have
email access.. (forgive me if you already have such info, but this is
really a boon for those who feel themselves unable to get any
web-stuff).. There are email services out there called _webservers_.
You send an email to the webserver and tell it to get the webpage or
pages you are interested in; it will visit the website, retrieve the
webpage (article, etc.), and send it to you via email. Turnaround is
usually a few hours or so. Here's a good one to try:

Send an email to: webmail@-----.ie
The subject of your message is unimportant. The body of your message
should read:
get <URL> or go <URL> For example:
get http://sneezy.mika.com/OCR/articles/moors2.html

I forget now, but one of these, either "get" or "go" will retrieve the
document in html format plus 80-column formatted text, and the other
will retrieve html only. The html portion will contain any further
imbedded links to associated pages or documents, which you can then
send another request for. The type with both html and 80-column format
will have all mentioned links footnoted and listed at the bottom of the
document for ease of further reference and retrievals.

If you make your first request for http://sneezy.mika.com/ then you
will get the an index of links to the major areas of the Klarinet
site, and you can then go further to retrieve just what you are
interested in reading.
Better yet, send for http://sneezy.mika.com/sneezy_index.html
That one may send it to you in a neater format.. but that's the
general principle.

Also, if you send an email to the webserver with just the word help in
the message body, you will be sent a help file that details the
commands that you may use there.

(N.B.- this will _NOT_ work for frames-type documents :-((

General note, please folks, use this if you have no other way, and also
use it conservatively, as some of these servers have closed down due to
overuse/abuse. And those with web access would probably find this
relatively inconvenient anyway <g>, yet it is fantastic for us
"web-challenged" types ;-)

Wow, these fingers sure can get going! <g>.. (will this help my
facility on the clarinet?? ;-) Apologies if I bored anyone, but
I know some of you Will find this quite beneficial!

Regards,

Robert
