The "thick" sound of Brahms's orchestra is, er, different with
"authentic" instrumentation. One of the problems of listening to any
concert or recording is that performing environments exist nowadays which
never existed in the composers' lifetimes.
Heresy coming up - perhaps Schumann actually wrote far better than Brahms
for the orchestra which he knew .....
