I have always thought it interesting that the ads talk about teaching
you the colours of different pitches, as that's the way I can tell what
notes are being played by other players, although in terms such as
*bright*, *round*, *thin* (of the note itself, not the player's sound),
but I don't consider myself to have an exceptional ear, and certainly
not perfect pitch. Perhaps it's a form of relative pitch? As someone
has already said (sorry, I couldn't find your name in a hurry), most of
us probably would recognise, if not all at least some of the notes, for
example D above the stave and F# top line, if we *had a go*.
Unfortunately, having played for many years in wind bands (Bb
exclusively), and not much orchestral experience, I now *hear* in Bb
pitch, which makes musical dictation fairly interesting. Relative
dictation?
