Joshua,
I have found a mike that I like alot. I play in a Klezmer band,
which is acoustic. So my mike must sound mellow, not harsh. I'm very
pleased with the Shure SM98. It is a phantom-powered condensor mike which
attaches to the instrument and points at the holes. I had to create my own
attachment, however, as the one that Shure makes is useless. (why is it
that companies which make superb products make such crappy accessories?
- just like Buffet can't make a mouthpiece to save their souls.) I
eventually hit on the rather ingenious idea of soldering a piece of thick
(#10) wire into a marching band lyre. The whole thing just attaches around
the lower joint and the mike points at the middle of the horn, like it's
supposed to. It is not heavy at all and I have total freedom of movement.
I tried the Shure against the Electrovoice and the Shure was
noticeably more mellow. I am pretty sure that it is also more mellow than
any of the mikes which are sold as Sax mikes in various catalogues.
