Subj: How to play the "wrong clarinet"
Date: Wed, 22 Jan 1997 13:39:33 -0500

Here are a couple of examples of how to use the "wrong" clarinet but maybe
win an audition, keep your job, have the conductor buy you a beer, etc..
These are all 1st clarinet parts:

Strauss, Don Juan: play letter G to K on Bb clarinet. The solo 8 after G
is then a piece of cake.

Kodaly, Hary Janos Suite: In movement 5, play the solo at number 3 on A
clarinet. The trills are much easier.

Bartok, Concerto for Orchestra: In movement 3, play till 22 on A clarinet.
Much easier.

Ravel Daphnis et Chloe, 2nd suite, Eb part: Play on D clarinet. You end up
in C major instead of B Major.

Borodin, Polovetian dances: Do the Andantino on Bb clarinet so that you are
ready for the Allegro vivo (only 2 measures rest going at 132-144).

If I think of any others I'll keep you posted. Right now I have to check
outside. I hear some type of banshee scream coming from the west - from
the direction of California as a matter of fact. Actually, I think I see a
large thunder cloud forming in that direction. Better get in the house
before the lightning starts. Dan L. you're in CA aren't you?

By the way feel free to use these, except if I'm at the same audition. I
would like to win one one day.

Dan P. (member of the "wrong" side of the tracks players association)
