I started playing almost 40 years ago in Southern California,
where the original questioner lived. (I played in the So California High
School Band for two years). It is my recollection that in the bands and
orchestras I played in through high school, 60-70 percent of the clarinet
players were male.

Now my son plays clarinet in his middle school band here in Las Vegas and
the situation is reversed, about 70 percent of the clarinet players are
female. There are also more female saxophone and brass players bringing the
overall ratio to around 50/50 which is as it should be.
