Subject: Tone quality and tone character

Roger suggests that the various parameters between a German system
clarinet and a French system clarinet account for differences in
tone quality. Roger, don't you mean tone character? Tone quality
is determined by a variety of factors most of which are external
to the clarinet itself. But the character of the tone, the nature
of what makes a clarinet sound like a clarinet, whether it be
French or German system, is determined by the physics of the
instrument.

I take it you understand "quality" to be always an evaluative term. I
don't. so
probably your "character" would include (subsume?) my "quality".
In any case, I did say that the differences in players' characteristics
might well be more important - this depends on what players are under
discussion, though.
Yours,
Roger
