when i was first starting an instrument, i wanted to play the trombone.
my parents said "that's no instrument for a young lady!" and chose the
clarinet for me. as a result, it took me years to learn to love it,
though i do now, of course.

so at least in Ohio in the 1950's, there was a perception that clarinet
was a girls' instrument.
